National Stress Awareness Day is commemorated on the first Wednesday of November. Stress is a natural response in our bodies that can arise both at work and in daily life, and it’s something everyone experiences from time to time. Stress Awareness Day marks the start of a month-long initiative during which health experts and professionals work together to raise public awareness about the causes and remedies for our modern-day stress epidemic.
Stress can seriously diminish our sense of well-being, and while it serves a valuable purpose in human biology, alerting us to threats or challenges, our modern lifestyles have amplified its presence, leaving many of us feeling overwhelmed. When we encounter pressures at work, face conflicts in our relationships, or experience constant worry, stress can have a significant impact on our health and happiness. Recognizing and managing stress is key to leading a healthier, more balanced life.
“In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.” – Fred Rogers

History of National Stress Awareness Day
National Stress Awareness Day has been celebrated every November since 1992. The International Stress Management Association (ISMA) established this day to provide tips and resources on managing stress aimed at both companies and individuals. ISMA’s mission is to help employers and employees support each other by offering comprehensive guides for creating effective stress management plans within organizations. They also emphasize the importance of individuals maintaining their health and well-being on a daily basis.
In a 1999 report, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) stated that work-related stress cost UK employers between £353 and £381 million per year, with the number of days lost to stress-related issues doubling over the following five years. By 2017, HSE reported that approximately 488,000 workers in the UK suffered from significant stress, depression, or anxiety, resulting in 11.7 million working days lost. With 45% of all days lost due to ill health attributed to these issues, the figures underscore the severity of the problem and highlight the urgent need for attention from staff, managers, and employees.
