The date marks the adoption of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others, which was approved by the General Assembly.
“Now I’ve been free, I know what a dreadful condition slavery is. I have seen hundreds of escaped slaves, but I never saw one who was willing to go back and be a slave.” – Harriet Tubman

History of International Day for the Abolition Of Slavery
The first occurrence of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery was observed in 1986 and was organized by the United Nations General Assembly. This day is celebrated annually on December 2, coinciding with the date in 1949 when the United Nations General Assembly approved the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others.
The observance focuses on eradicating modern forms of slavery, including human trafficking, sexual exploitation, the worst forms of child labor, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.
In 1985, a UN report from the Working Group on Slavery suggested that December 2 be proclaimed as the World Day for the Abolition of Slavery in All Its Forms. By 1995, this day became known as the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery.
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), around 21 million women, men, and children worldwide are forced into slavery. Additionally, sources reveal that over one million children are trafficked each year for cheap labor or sexual exploitation. These forms of modern slavery are global issues and violate Article 4 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
It states that
“no one shall be held in slavery or servitude, slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.”
