History of Day Without Art Day
The first occurrence of the Day Without Art Day was held in the year 1988. It is an awareness day that coincides with World Aids Day. The purpose of commemorating this day is to promote awareness about the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It is a Day that takes action on spreading the awareness of this deadly disease and mourning in response to the worsening AIDS crisis. The purpose of the day is to make the people aware that AIDS can touch everyone. To inspire positive action among the people, about 800 U.S. art and AIDS groups had participated in the first year celebration. They have shut down the museums, send the staff to volunteer at AIDS services, and sponsored special exhibitions of work about AIDS.
The name of this Day itself will make people think what kind of place would be in the world without art and artists. So many artists have this AIDS. Since then, this Day has grown into a collaborative project in which approximately 8,000 national and international organizations had taken part. It includes museums, galleries, art centers, libraries, high schools, colleges, and AIDS service organizations. Visual AIDS in 1998 had proposed that the name of the day be changed to Day With Art (DWA). They have done it to help promote the annual cultural events that in turn would help draw attention to the AIDS pandemic.
