History of No Smoking Day
No Smoking Day has been in celebration since the year 1984. It was held on Ash Wednesday when it was called Quit for the Day. However, it has been observed on the second Wednesday in March at present. It is an annual awareness day celebrated in the United Kingdom at first and has been observed globally. The Day aims at helping those smokers over the world to quit smoking. It sorts out the dangers and harmful effects of smoking and its addiction by spreading awareness through various means. Every year, the campaign is promoted with a theme usually a short phrase. For instance, the theme of 2010 was “Break free” which encouraged the chain smokers to quit this bad habit on the No Smoking Day and whereas the theme of 2011 was “Time to quit?“
The awareness Day has been run by the London-based charity with the name same as of this Day until 2011 when it merged with the British Heart Foundation. Currently, both the coalition of governmental and voluntary sector organizations are funding this campaign. The mission of this Day is to reach all types of smokers irrespective of their age, sex, or social class and help spur the smokers into the action of quitting smoking. It is found that smokers are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack when compared with people who have never smoked. Stopping from the smoking habit has huge health benefits and is never too late to give it up. The single best thing that one can do for heart health can be none other than quitting smoking.
All those who have the thought of staying away from the smoking habit can start at any day and on No Smoking Day. It was found that 1 in 10 smokers quit smoking on this day according to research conducted in the year 2009. Stopping smoking will reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and different types of cancer from mouth to lungs. As the smoking habit increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, anyone who wants to spend the rest of their life needs to wake up to stay away from smoking. Smokers can even get the necessary help and support whenever they are about to stop smoking.
