National Constitution Day, also known asĀ Samvidhan Divas, is commemorated every year on November 26 in India. While it is not an official public holiday, this day holds significant importance as it marks the adoption of the Constitution of India. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution, which officially came into effect on January 26, 1950, marking the beginning of a new era in the country’s history.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, widely regarded as the Father of the Indian Constitution, played a pivotal role in its creation. After India gained independence, he was invited by the Congress government to serve as the first Law Minister of India. On August 29, 1947, Dr. Ambedkar was appointed as the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee. As the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, he is remembered for his vision of a united and progressive India.
“I feel that the constitution is workable, it is flexible and it is strong enough to hold the country together both in peacetime and in wartime. Indeed, if I may say so, if things go wrong under the new Constitution, the reason will not be that we had a bad Constitution. What we will have to say is that Man was vile” – BR Ambedkar
