National Pins and Needles Day is celebrated every year on November 27. The true origin of this day, like many other holidays, has been largely forgotten. It was originally established in 1937 to commemorate the opening of the pro-labor musical Pins and Needles on Broadway. However, over time, the original significance of the day has faded. Today, many people associate it either with the nervousness felt while doing stitching work or the tingling sensation commonly experienced when a foot “falls asleep.”

History of National Pins And Needles Day
National Pins and Needles Day originated in the 1930s during the labor movement. It traces its roots to the pro-labor musical play Pins and Needles, which premiered on November 27, 1937, at the Labor Stage Theater in New York City. Written by Harold Rome, the Broadway play was produced by the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, one of the largest labor unions in the United States at the time.
The play depicted the lives of workers during the American labor movement, and its cast was composed of union members. Pins and Needles was a phenomenal success, running for approximately 1,108 performances. Initially, the cast members balanced their day jobs as garment workers with evening performances, but they eventually transitioned to a full schedule of shows.
The play originally ran from 1937 to 1940, returned for a revival in 1978, and appeared on London stages in 2010. Its enduring legacy highlights its cultural and historical significance as a symbol of labor solidarity and artistic expression.
