World Town Planning Day is observed on November 8 each year. Also known as World Urbanism Day (WTPD), it provides an excellent opportunity to view planning from a global perspective. The American Planning Association (APA) encourages its members to consider planning challenges and solutions worldwide on this day. World Urbanism Day is a special occasion to recognize and promote the role of planning in creating livable communities.
“Apparently the town, a triumph of post-war socialist planning was a sewer, full of tattooed beasts and violent zombies, with vomit and blood frothing in the gutters. I couldn’t wait to see it.” – Hanif Kureishi

History of World Town Planning Day
Professor Carlos María Della Paolera of the University of Buenos Aires founded World Urbanism Day in 1949 to promote public and professional interest in urban planning, both regionally and internationally. The American Institute of Certified Planners supports World Urbanism Day as a means to raise awareness and garner support for community and regional planning among the general public and all levels of government through activities that recognize American achievements on this day each year.
Reasons to Celebrate WTPD:
- To raise awareness of the goals, objectives, and development of urban and regional planning around the world.
- To promote the ideals of urban and regional planning not only within the profession but also among the general public.
- To highlight the significant contributions of sound planning to the improvement of global human settlements and their conditions.
