History of World Teacher’s Day
World Teacher’s Day or International Teacher’s Day was first celebrated on October 5, 1994. International Teacher’s Day is a tribute to the teachers, and it acknowledges their contributions to the field of education and development. Teachers are the pillar of support for any nation-building. The contributions of the teachers to their local community and global society are extensive. The celebration of the day aims to mobilize support for the teachers. It also honors the teachers and their role in providing an excellent education at all levels. International Teacher’s Day enables children and adults to participate in the celebration.
The representatives of UNESCO and the International Labour Organization signed “Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers” on October 5, 1966. They closed the Special Intergovernmental Conference on the Status of Teachers in Paris, France, on this day. The UNESCO’s 29th session of the General Conference was opened on October 12, 1997. “Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel” was adopted during this conference on November 11, 1997. The first World Teachers’ Day was held on October 5, 1994. Since then, the celebration has been organized each year on the same date. Education International (EI) firmly believes that World Teachers’ Day should be internationally recognized and celebrated worldwide. EI every year launches a public awareness campaign to highlight the contributions of the teaching profession. More than 100 countries are observing World Teachers’ Day.

Teacher’s Day in most countries marks the contribution of any famed educator or person of educational repute. In almost all countries worldwide, Teachers’ Day is celebrated with children, students, and pupils.
