World Tapir Day is observed on April 27 of every year. A tapir is a large, herbivorous mammal, similar in shape to a pig, with a short, prehensile nose trunk. Tapir lives in jungle and forest regions of South America, Central America, and Southeastern Asia. The five existing species of tapirs are the Brazilian tapir, the Malayan tapir, Baird’s tapir, the Kabomani tapir, and the Mountain Tapir. The average lifespan of a Tapir is about 25 to 30 years. They require a large space of undisturbed land to maintain a genetically diverse population. Human activity threatens it – be that mining, palm oil plantations, roads, or settlements. All the species of tapir face the threat of extinction. It is important to save tapirs to save rainforests and other habitats, thereby helping to save the planet and reduce the effect of climate change.
“We all have a responsibility to protect endanger ed species, both for their sake and for the sake of our own future generations.” – Loretta Lynch
History of World Tapir Day
The creator of the World Tapir Day remains unknown. World Tapir Day is believed to be celebrated since 2008 and hopes to be created to spread awareness about these endangered animals and to protect them for future generations. These species have to be saved for their importance as it plays a vital role in reducing deforestation, serve to disperse seeds throughout the jungle, and are one of the oldest species found in the areas. Though they are the oldest species, currently there are only 3000 to 4500 tapirs left in the world.
