History of World Mosquito Day
The origin and history of World Mosquito Day date back to some hundreds of years before. The day was officially established and first observed by British doctor Sir Ronald Ross ever since 1897. Having crossed more than 120 years, Doctor Ross is responsible for the annual observance of World Mosquito Day. He declared the commemoration of the day once after his discovery which proved that the female Anopheles mosquitoes were the reason for malaria transmit between the humans. The discovery of Ross had laid a firm foundation for scientists from all over the world to understand the mosquito’s deadly role in disease transmission better. It had further brought out much more efficient innovations and interventions on how to deal with the mosquitoes. So the aim and motto of this day are to put in some form of awareness amongst the people about the cause of malaria and its prevention methods. Furthermore, the celebration marks the tribute to the groundbreaking work of Sir Ross and other colleagues who followed him to bring out its deadly impact. Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoans.
The disease was widespread in both tropical and subtropical regions including Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Till 1897, people had neither known how malaria was transmitted, nor how to treat and combat the disease. But his discovery had brought a solution to humankind. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine holds the celebration of Mosquito Day every year. The ceremony takes place as a tradition that dates back to as early as the 1930s, and it also includes events like parties and exhibitions. It is designed for both the purpose of entertainment and to make them aware that is a curable infectious disease. Malaria No More’s ‘Mozzy Air’ campaign is a part of the celebration that will encourage people to take antimalarial vaccination when flying to malaria-prone zones. Nothing But Nets’ Twitter campaigns will provide mosquito nets for those poor communities as an aid in helping them stay away from malaria.
