History of World Honey Bee Day
The World Honey Bee Day was first originated as an event in 2009 by a small group of beekeepers. The day was initially named National Honey Bee Day, but it later earned more sense and became a worldwide celebration as bees matter so much from all over the world. It was formally called National Honey Bee Awareness Day which started as an awareness day by the beekeepers in the United States. The main motto of celebrating this day is to build community awareness of the bee industry to the public through education and promotion. The sustainable development goals and climate change had made bees, and other pollinators get unnoticed. The beekeepers who petitioned for celebrating this day as an honor for honey bees and beekeeping had obtained a formal proclamation by the USDA. Later in 2010, Pennsylvania Apiculture Inc. a non-profit organization was established that better facilitated and encouraged awareness and celebration. The original date of observation was the fourth Saturday of August but later settled on the third Saturday of August. On this day, the Honey Bee awareness enthusiasts will put a bee in your bonnet to promote their engagement in the field of agriculture, since bees and other such pollinators contribute one-third of all food produced globally. Also, honey bee lovers will even decorate their gardens as a form to attract the bees.
