World Gin Day is celebrated on the Second Saturday of every June. This year, it will be celebrated on June 8. World Gin Day is a day to celebrate Gin! Gin is a distilled spirit that has a rich history that covers the mysterious origins of its use. Also, gin has been used medicinally but only once stated as medicine. While spirits have been used medicinally, only one started as a medicine and then became a mixer for one of the essential medicines in history. This refreshing, smooth drink is extracted from the berries of the Juniper tree, and its origins can be traced back to an older bottle from Denmark that is perceived as Jenever.
“I don’t know what reception I’m at, but for God’s sake give me a gin and tonic.” – Denis Thatcher
History of World Gin Day
World Gin Day was established by England’s authority on the juniper-based drink, the Gin Monkey. Emma, the titular Gin Monkey, has been a massive fan of cocktails of all kinds and has worked everywhere in the Newcastle, London, and Leeds area in multiple cocktail bars. Delivering this experience to the streets, she performed her Gin Monkey site, put together with the intent of saving courageous bar-hoppers from obtaining the worst of the alcohol joints at their end. After having had an amazingly hard time finding anything worth drinking when she first arrived in London, she determined someone had to solve this problem for other travelers, and it might as well be her. Since then, she’s taken a dedicated role in contributing independent and disinterested views of the gin joints in her area.
But Gin has had a great history as a medicine, or rather, as a way to make medicine more delicious. Quinine is the distillation of the ground bark of the cinchona tree, which gave a tonic that was capable of handling Malaria. Regrettably, the quinine was amazingly bitter, and gin was used to cut it. The flavor touches, and to this day, the Tonic in the Gin and Tonic contains a small bit of quinine to capture the flavor of the original.
