World Elephant Day comes on August 12 of every year. This day is mainly dedicated to the preservation and protection of worldwide elephants. Elephants are very intelligent, have great memories, and are family-oriented animals. They are capable of feeling deep emotions, from intense sadness to joy bordering on happiness, as well as empathy and charming self-awareness. Still, countless elephants are ruthlessly killed every year for their ivory by greedy poachers who then leave their carcasses to rot in the sun.
History of World Elephant Day
Two Canadian filmmakers Patricia Sims and Thailand’s Elephant Reintroduction Foundation created the day in 2011, and it was held on August 12, 2012. William Shatner narrates the film Return to the Forest-based on depicts the life of a young man and young elephant in Thailand. It was the follow-up feature film When Elephants Were Young and the film made them reintroduce captive Asian elephants to the wild and was released on the inaugural of World Elephant Day.
