World Citizen Day is an annual celebration observed on November 19th of every year. Being a citizen of the world makes a closer bonding with people of different cultures, religions, races, and locations. It makes every citizen of the world know every other citizen of the world in the better way possible. The day is celebrated to provide a chance for the people to understand and recognize different kinds of people and their actions.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead
History of World Citizen Day
There is no proper mention of the first occurrence of World Citizen Day. In the year 2000, the Association of World Citizens (AWC) has filed a resolution proposing that November 19th should be declared as World Citizens Day. The Canadian Centre of World Citizens in 2002 has launched Newsletter No.11 for celebrating this Day in Mississauga. Gerhard Hirschman has invited the World Citizens for a gathering in Magdeburg in the year 2005. The aim of Citizens Day is to make the people realize that all the humans of the world are united, and any decision taken by a few will impact others.
Despite having so many differences, every citizen of the world is equal in having rights and duties. So this day is celebrated for greater recognition of the need for collaboration and making voluntary action. Every citizen has the ability to learn something from other people, other cultures, and other races. On this Day anyone must learn to respect the differences by recognizing in them what we all have in common.
