World Car-Free Day is celebrated on September 22 every year. The celebration of the day is observed to encourage motorists to give up their cars for a day. Thus, the aim of the Car-Free Day is to lower the heat prevailing on the planet for at least one day by motivating the people to try other alternatives and making less dependent on their cars. It is worth celebrating as this World Car-Free Day helps in reducing pollution.
“Sooner or later, we will have to recognize that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans.” – Evo Morales
History of World Car-Free Day
The World Car-Free Day was first observed in the year 2000. The Environmental Transport Association established the initial annual Car-Free Day on the first Tuesday of their Green Transport Week in the second half of June. From 2000, it was celebrated as a self-standing day held on September 22. The day invites a large number of cities to close their centers to cars. In some cities and countries, organized events will be held. The event promotes improving mass transit, pedestrians, bicycles, and public transit. The event will vary depending on the location and thereby provide the motorists and drivers with an idea of their locality with fewer automobiles. Furthermore, the event supports community development by providing jobs closer to the people who can go shopping within walking distance. World Carfree Day is the perfect time to reduce the heat of the planet.
