History of UAE National Day
The first observance of UAE National Day and the person who established it remain unknown. This day marks the United Arab Emirates’ Union Day, celebrating the unification of the seven emirates. On December 2, 1971, six emirates—Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, and Umm al-Quwain—united, and Ras Al Khaimah joined as the seventh emirate in 1972.
The historic union began when the rulers of the six emirates agreed to unite on December 2, 1971. They approved an interim constitution, which governed the state and outlined its goals. On February 10, 1972, Ras Al Khaimah announced its decision to join the union, completing the formation of the UAE.
In 1968, Britain declared its intention to withdraw from its colonies and protectorates in the Eastern Mediterranean. This prompted the idea of the union, which began on February 18, 1968, when Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan met at the Samih border. They agreed that the best path forward was to invite the Gulf Emirates to join the union.
UAE National Day commemorates the country’s formal independence from British Protectorate Treaties, which expired on December 2, 1971. This led to the federal unification of the seven sheikhdoms in the former Trucial States, forming the modern-day UAE. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became the first president of the federation, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum was named the vice president.
