International Turkey Vulture Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of September every year. This year it will be celebrated on 2nd September. Vultures are an ecologically vital group of birds that face a range of threats in several areas where they occur. Populations of many varieties are under pressure, and some species are facing destruction. These scavengers are usually depicted flying over some helpless cowboy lost in an arid desert, rubbing their beaks in cruel anticipation. This stereotype has some negative results in the real world.
“It seems that it had been destined before that I should occupy myself so thoroughly with the vulture, for it comes to my mind as a very early memory, when I was still in the cradle, a vulture came down to me, he opened my mouth with his tail and struck me a few times with his tail against my lips.” – Leonardo da Vinci
History of International Turkey Vulture Day
In South Africa, the Birds of Prey Programme runs the International Vulture Awareness Day, and in England, the Hawk Conservancy Trust chose to work together and expand the enterprise into an international event. It is now known that a coordinated international day will publicize the conservation of vultures to a broader audience and highlight the important work being done by the world’s vulture conservationists.
