“Chocolate is the first luxury. It has so many things wrapped up in it: Deliciousness in the moment, childhood memories, and that grin-inducing feeling of getting a reward for being good.” – Mariska Hargitay
History of National Sweetest Day
The origin and history of National Sweetest Day are quite arguable. The Day was celebrated on the third Saturday of every October. It was said that the first observance of this Day was held on October 10, 1921, in Cleveland. It was the day where a committee of 12 candy makers led by C.C. Hartzell, gathered together and delivered 20,000 boxes of candies and chocolates. They had given the candies to the less-privileged people in the city. The film stars Theda Bara, and Ann Pennington had assisted the committee.
One another statement mentioned that in 1922, Herbert Birch Kingston a candy-store owner in Cleveland distributed candies and chocolates to several of the hospitals and orphanages in the area. It is celebrated in a similar way to Valentine’s Day in most locations. People exchanges popular gifts, cards, flowers, chocolates, and candy. People greet each other with other gifts of love to express their affection and love. It is a day for women to treat their men by sharing romantic deeds or expressions. The Sweetest Day created by the candy industry aims in increasing the sales of sweets and cards.
