Gastronomy is the study of the relationship between food and culture. It involves training and studying the preparation, production, and service of various foods and beverages from countries around the world. Sustainability is the idea of something that is done in a way without causing any infliction to our natural resources and can be continued into the future without being harmful to our environment or health. In order to preserve sustainable Gastronomy, the Sustainable Gastronomy Day is celebrated around the world.
History of Sustainable Gastronomy Day
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the day on 21 December 2016 in its resolution A/RES/71/246. Then it was designated for 18 June as an international observance. On this day, UNESCO, FAO, and UNGA will facilitate the day in collaboration with United Nations Organisation (UNO) and their member states to create awareness about their contribution to sustainable development.

UNESCO’s Initiatives on this Day
- Originating the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, created in 2004 to share best practices and develop partnerships in 7 creative fields around the world. Now there are more than 26 cities have been entitled the Creative Cities of Gastronomy.
- Encouraging clean sources of energy for local restaurants, like the usage of gas and electricity instead of coal and the use of natural gas instead of carbon.
- Creating public awareness about Sustainable Gastronomy on various TV food channels, gastronomy shows, and through food cultural exhibitions designated for the food industry and farmers.
