But on seeing this famous cartoon character, there were lots of us who got inspired and started eating it. History of National Spinach Day
The origin and the historical references of National Spinach Day are anonymous. There is no mention of the originator and the year in which Spinach Day was celebrated. However, the creator would have probably known the importance of these veggies and thus came with a special day for the spinach. The Day aims at making people especially children, understand the importance of eating spinach. There are lots of ways in which one can deliciously consume spinach. With the consumption of this leafy green plant, you will get lots of health benefits as well. Spinach is seen to be one of the healthiest vegetables which is rich in iron and a great source of protein, calcium, fiber, and vitamins A, C, and K. It is low in calories, rich in fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins, calcium, cancer-fighting antioxidants, phytonutrients and more. Also, it is thought that spinach helps in improving the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal health of those who regularly consume it.
Spinach is an annual edible flowering plant that is native to central and western Asia and belongs to the family Amaranthaceae. It is classified as Savoy, Flat or Smooth Leaf, and Semi-savoy. These green leafy vegetables were thought to have originated in ancient Persia, and the Arab traders carried the spinach into India. It was then introduced into ancient China, where the Spanish were known as the “Persian vegetable.” The leaves of the spinach are eaten as a vegetable, and they are simple, alternate, ovate to triangular. Every spinach leaf varies in size from about 2–30 cm long and 1–15 cm broad. Where the larger leaves of the spinach will be present at the base of the plant and smaller leaves will be higher on the flowering stem. The first written evidence of spinach was found in the 10th century. Spinach was Catherine de Medici’s favorite vegetable during her reign as queen of France. On this Day, dishes served on a bed of spinach are known as “Florentine,” reflecting the birth of Catherine in Florence.

There are so many delicious ways to celebrate National Spinach Day. Eat as much spinach as you can on this Day, as there is no shortage of spinach recipes. Eat it raw or cook it to add more taste. Start off the celebration Day with soups to salads, pizza sauces, casseroles, omelets, and what about a spinach cake? You can buy fresh spinach salad and spinach pizza for your children to make them eat it in another way possible. If you are a farmer, then you can plant spinach seeds in your garden and consume them fresh. Spread knowledge and information among your children about the importance of spinach consumption in everyday life.
