International Space Day is celebrated on the First Friday of each May. This year it falls on May 3. International Space Day is created to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education among young people to motivate them to pursue their careers in the Science field, especially in Space-related jobs. The day also encourages young people to learn more about space and its exploration.
“Astronomy compels the soul to look upward, and leads us from this world to another.” – Plato, The Republic
History of International Space Day
In 1997, Space Day was created by Lockheed Martin Corporation as a one-day event. Due to its extreme popularity, John Glenn, former astronaut, and senator expanded Space Day to International Space Day in 2001. The main aim behind the creation of this day is to learn about the wonders of the unknown space which our planned flats in and to encourage the children to pursue their careers in the scientific field.
Generally, Space refers to the void which exists between the earth’s upper atmosphere and other celestial bodies in the universe. Space or outer space is full of several forms of radiation and various debris (meteors, comets, and asteroids) from the formation of our solar system. Several scientific organizations around the world celebrate this day with gatherings, demonstrations, and educational programs. So it is a perfect day for you and your kids to learn about the unknown wonders of space.
