National Single Parents Day is an annual observance celebrated on March 21. In today’s world, raising children is all the way a challenging task. In every walk of life, it is the sole responsibility of the parents to teach the good and bad of life. Imagine how it will be when it comes to a single parent raising his/her children? It is, of course, the toughest task as the single parent is a parent who parents alone without the support of the spouse. Those one souls do the double duty and try to be both a mother and father to their children. It is indeed necessary to appreciate and honor a special day on the calendar. Thus, National Single Parents Day celebrates, recognises, and respects those single parents and their love, hard work, sacrifice, devotion, and more of everything they do for their children.
“I’m a single parent, a working mother, an executive, and an author. My greatest accomplishment will be to raise three wonderful children.” – Ivana Trump
History of National Single Parents Day
National Single Parents Day has been in celebration since the year 1984. President Ronald Reagan has declared this Day by signing the 5166 Proclamation. Earlier to this in 1984, Janice Moglen, a divorced mother of two has written an article in the hope that Single Parents Day might one day gain the recognition many associates with both Mother’s and Father’s Day. Moglen began to petition individual states to declare their own recognition of the Single Parents Day in collaboration with the Parents Without Partners organization. It is believed that the date, March 21, was chosen as a way to coincide with the inception of the Parents Without Partners organization that began on March 21, 1957.
Thus, Single Parents Day is celebrated to honor and applaud the single parents and all the hard work they do every day in raising their children. Most often single parent refers to those parents who take care of their children without another spouse’s support. All the financial, material and emotional needs of the children will be satisfied by that single parent. Being single parents is not an intentional thing. In most cases, the major cause of single parenting is due to the death of a partner. And at times, it is the result of the breakup or divorce of coupled parents.
