World Schizophrenia Day is an annual observance celebrated on May 24th of every year. There are so many mental disorders classified, and Schizophrenia is one among them. World Schizophrenia Day’s history and origin are unknown. There isn’t any mention of the person who created this and the year from when the Day has been globally observed. However, Schizophrenia Day is an awareness day that aims at letting people all over the world know about this mental disorder, its causes, symptoms, and effects. It is a Day that is created to support those people who are suffering from this long-term psychiatric illness. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that is usually characterized by abnormal social behavior and failure to understand reality. The people who are living with this mental illness will encounter numerous challenges as schizophrenia declines the functionality and quality of their life.
Most often the person suffering from this disease will suffer from symptoms like false beliefs, hearing voices that others don’t hear, unclear or confused thinking, lack of motivation, and reduced social engagement and emotional expression. Besides this, an individual may also suffer from disorganized thinking and speech. It is found that about 0.3 to 0.7 percent of people are affected by schizophrenia disease during their lifetimes. But the fact is nearly 30 to 50 percent of people with this illness fail to accept that they are suffering from it. World Schizophrenia Day aims to make people realize that Schizophrenia is curable through antipsychotic medication, along with the counseling or job training and social rehabilitation.
