History of National Sacher Torte Day
The history, origin, and founder of National Sacher Torte Day are unknown. But Sacher Torte has a long tradition. It is a special type of chocolate cake or torte. It was invented by Chef Austrian Franz Sacher in the year 1832 for Prince Wenzel von Metternich in Vienna, Austria. He is one of the most famous Viennese culinary specialties. Franz Sacher was only an apprentice who prepared the cake instead of his head chef who had fallen ill. Prince Wenzel Von Metternich ordered a special dessert from the kitchen for his guests, and Franz Sacher had prepared the cake.
Sacher had created what is known worldwide as the Sacher Torte now. The cake is created with a chocolate sponge cake with apricot jam between layers of the cake and topped with a layer of dark chocolate icing. It is typically served with unsweetened whipped cream. The original recipe is a secret preserved today and is served exclusively by the Sacher Hotels in Vienna and Salzburg.
