If March 2nd falls on a weekend, then this day will be celebrated on the closest working day. It is observed to Motivate and encourage children to read books. This day is not a public holiday, but it is a national observance in the United States of America.
“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” – Dr. Seuss.
History of National Read Across America Day
National Education Association (NEA) in May 1997 came up with the idea of creating a day to celebrate reading. The first National Read Across America Day was observed on 2nd March 1998. Encouraging children to read helps them to achieve great success in life. Research says that children who spend a lot of time reading books will perform better in school. National Education Association sponsors this day and also provides resources needed to children, parents, and teachers for reading. Libraries and schools also play an essential role to promote this day in the United States. National Read Across America Day is also supported by actors, sports stars, politicians, and other celebrities, they support the day by giving reading tasks to young readers, and they also take some time to sit and read to students.
