National Pecan Pie Day is celebrated on July 12 of every year. The day is to treat yourself and your loved ones with the smooth filling and a crunchy top sweet delight – Pecan Pie. The pecan pie is usually made with corn syrup, pecan nuts, salt, and vanilla flavoring with some variations, including sugar syrup and maple syrup or molasses. Chocolate and bourbon whisky are traditional additions in some regions of the country. Pecan pie is mainly served with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
“I make a mean pecan pie, and I have a great recipe for pralines – also using pecans. Pralines take a lot of patience, and patience is a must in the duck blind as well as in the kitchen. Good things come to those who wait.” – Phil Robertson.
History of National Pecan Pie Day
The creator or founder of National Pecan Pie Day is still unknown. But there are stories about the origin of Pecan Pie. Some people stated that the French first made the Pecan Pie after settling in New Orleans in the 1700s and being introduced to the pecan by the Native Americans of the area. However, some insist that pecan pie was first created in Alabama in the early 1800s. However, no recipe or other culinary literature has been found supporting either of those claims. The Karo syrup makers significantly popularised pecan pie. Their company has argued that the pie was a “discovery” in the 1930s by the wife of a corporate sales executive as a “new use for corn syrup.”
