World Password Day is held on May 6th of this year. It is an annual observance that falls on the First Thursday of every May. Imagine how will it be when any of your personal user accounts are left open without any encryption. So it will be easy for others to misuse all your data and other information, right? Just like the locks you have for your home, it is vital to protect all your valuable private details from others. Thus comes the need for passwords that protects all the data from those who hack and steal. Passwords are found everywhere in your email, banking, bill payments, shopping, social media, and more. They play an important part in the everyday life of those who are living in the technologically developed world. Having a simple password is not a matter of fact, it is essential to have a stronger password to protect the digital details. World Password Day is a day set aside as a reminder for all of us about the important role passwords are playing and the need for strong passwords.
“Treat your password like your toothbrush. Don’t let anybody else use it, and get a new one every six months.” – Clifford Stoll
History of World Password Day
World Password Day has been celebrated since the year 2013. Intel Security is found to be the organization that has created this Day. Password Day was created in a way to raise awareness about the critical need for good passwords everywhere. Mark Burnett, a security researcher was the first person who has encouraged people to have a Password Day. On getting inspired by this idea of Mark, Intel Security took the initiative to declare the first Thursday in Every May as the World Password Day in May 2013. As submitted by Big Monocle in 2016, Password Day is meant to create awareness about the need for good password security. The day is encouraged and promotes people to have better password habits as the passwords are considered to be the critical gatekeepers to any digital identity.
The cyber-security theft is considered to be one of the world’s fastest-growing crimes, however, adding strong authentication to your password will prevent the threats. In such a scenario, maintaining good and diverse passwords is all the way critical. And on Password Day, you can take the time to think about the passwords and improve every other password of yours. With the growing need for encryption, there are lots of different password encryptions available to choose to make use of. Add an extra layer of security via strong passwords, fingerprint scanning, single-use codes, USB tokens, and more. In either of these ways, you are enabling your protection beyond your normal password.
A password is a word or string of characters that is used for user authentication as a proof of identity. In other words, passwords provide access approval to gain access to a resource that is meant to be secret and is not accessible by all. A password can be anything like numbers, upper and lower case letters, special characters, or a combination of any two or all. The use of passwords or watchwords is found in existence from ancient times when usernames and passwords are the most commonly used term in the modern world. World Password Day provides a warning for every other digital content user that the passwords are the only way to get away from identity theft.

How to Celebrate World Password Day
The best possible way to celebrate the day is to make sure you have stronger password protection for your internet-based access. Ensure you have not used the names associated with you and your family, anniversary dates, birthdays, birthplace, or the word password as they were found to be the most commonly used passwords that are considered to be insecure. Opt for multi-factor authentication for all your important accounts to add more security and encryption. Gather up and encourage people about password threats and make them use a higher level of authentication to their computer or any other gadget by hosting a password party. Share your views and thoughts about Password Day on social media using the hashtag #PasswordDay.
