National Sunscreen Day is celebrated on May 27 of every year. It is a lotion, spray, gel, and topical product that assimilates or reflects some of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and it helps by protecting against sunburn, mainly for fair-skinned individuals. Persistent use of sunscreen can be slow or temporarily prevent the increase of ridges and hesitating skin. Depending on the mode of action, it can classify into physical sunscreens that reflect the sunlight or chemical sunscreens that absorb the UV light.
“Medical professionals recommend that people apply sunscreen to skin exposed to sunlight to prevent skin cancer.”
History of National Sunscreen Day
In 1936, chemist Eugene Schueller invented a preventative sunburn lotion and went on to start L’Oreal. At the same time, Swiss chemist Franz Greiter was invigorated to develop a sun solution after he was sunburned while escalating Mount Piz Buin. His product came to the market under the name Piz Buin in 1946 and is sold today. In 1944, Florida apothecary Benjamin Green Red Vet Pet sunscreen became a Coppertone suntan cosmetic and was popular throughout the 1950s. Sunscreen Day is a good reminder to make sure you apply and reapply your sunscreen whenever you go outdoors. Enjoy the beautiful weather and consume sunscreen.
