National Stepfamily Day is celebrated on September 16 of every year. Things have improved a lot in the past decades. Where once marriage was a life-long institution and divorce unheard of, now more than half of all marriages end in divorce. This isn’t as bad a thing as it reflects, as many of those ‘lifelong marriages’ were held concurrently in spite of internal abuse, general depression, and worse, due to societal forces. Regardless of your view on divorce and marriage, something good has come from this new paradigm, and that’s the stepfamily. National Stepfamily Day acknowledges all those who live in blended families.
“A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no aw, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.”
History of National Stepfamily Day
Being part of a stepfamily can be challenging; you’re growing into a place with people who weren’t part of your family before, and quickly, they’re uncles, sisters, brothers, even parents to you. How hard must it be for somebody who yesterday wasn’t related at all to immediately be considered your siblings? That being said, growing up with a Stepfamily can be rewarding, especially when everyone works together to overcome the difficulties and create an amazing blended family.
To make things even harder, if you’re part of a Stepfamily, it almost inevitably means that you’ve later had to deal with going through a divorce. This produces all sorts of difficulties, jealousy amongst siblings and birth parents, and the malice that indeed led to the end of the previous marriage. These surely aren’t part of everyone’s experience, and in fact, they don’t have to be the reality that you have. Stepfamilies come together every day, are strong, and act like an extended family rather than a divided one. National Stepfamily Day is devoted to honoring those who have joined your family and educating yourself on the challenges you face so you can defeat them together.

How to Celebrate National Stepfamily Day
Start the prime off by saying to your stepfamily that you love them and acknowledge them for being there with you through the difficulties you face together. Then give the day with them working to build your relationship further, and fast how far you’ve come together. If you’re struggling with your stepfamily, manifest a desire to bring things back up and cement your relationship closer. There’s a lot of moving pieces in a stepfamily, and only through conjoined energy can you hope to have everything work out beautifully. National Stepfamily Day prompts you that it’s an everyday process, and it can get better, easier, and more rewarding over time. You can use the hashtag #StepfamilyDay to spread awareness on social media.
