National Sea Monkey Day is commemorated on May 16 of every year. The day celebrates the amazing creatures which come alive while placed in water. Sea-Monkey is a brand name for the group of crustaceans called Brine Shrimp which is sold as novelty aquarium pets in hatching kits. Discovered by Harold Von Braunhut in 1957, the product was heavily marketed in comic books and still holds a presence in popular culture. Children and adults are fascinated by these amazing creatures, which are borns instantly when placed in water.
History of National Sea Monkey Day
The exact origin and the founder of National Sea Monkey Day are still unknown. In 1957, Harold Von Braunhaut created a product based on brine shrimp. Initially, it was named “Instant Life”, but later he changed the name to “Sea-Monkeys” in the year 1962. They got their name because of their salt-water habitat and their tail looks like the Tail of a monkey. The product was incredibly marketed in the comic books using the illustrations of the humanoid animals created by the comic-book illustrator Joe Orlando. Von Braunhaut quoted
“I think I bought something like 3.2 million pages of comic book advertising a year. It worked beautifully.”
The references to the sea monkeys have been made in films and television series like Night Court, Roseanne, Spin City, South Park, It’s Carry Shandling’s Show, The Simpsons, and Desperate Housewives. Sea Monkeys went into space with astronaut John Glenn on October 29, 1998. They returned to earth after spending nine days in space, and the eggs were hatched eight weeks later, apparently unaffected by their travels.
