National Saxophone Day is celebrated every year on November 6. This day honors the saxophone, a popular woodwind instrument used in jazz, classical music, and military bands. Saxophone Day also commemorates the birth anniversary of Adolphe Sax, the instrument maker and musician who invented the saxophone in 1840. It’s a perfect occasion to appreciate this iconic instrument in jazz by listening to some great saxophone music.
“I love the sound of the saxophone. It became my singing voice, and it sounds so human. The saxophone could carry the words past the border of words. It can carry it a little bit farther.” – Joy Harjo

History of National Saxophone Day
The origin and founder of National Saxophone Day remain unknown. However, November 6 was chosen to honor the birthdate of Adolphe Sax. Born on November 6, 1814, Sax was a prolific inventor who created many musical instruments, including the saxophone. In the early 1840s, he designed saxophones in various sizes, and on June 28, 1846, he was granted a 15-year patent for the instrument. This patent covered 14 different versions of the original design, divided into two groups of seven instruments each, ranging from sopranino to contrabass. After the patent expired in 1866, other saxophonists and instrument manufacturers made significant improvements to Sax’s original design.
The saxophone comes in various types, though most saxophonists use one of the four most popular varieties: tenor, baritone, alto, and soprano. The tenor saxophone is commonly used in jazz and rock bands, while the baritone saxophone is often featured in jazz solos. The alto saxophone is relatively easy to play, making it an ideal choice for beginners. The soprano saxophone produces the highest pitch among all saxophones and is also frequently played in jazz bands. Other types of saxophones include the mezzo-soprano, sopranino, tubax, bass, and contrabass.
