National Richter Scale Day is celebrated on April 26 of every year. The day marks the birth anniversary of Charles F. Richter, an American seismologist, and physicist. For his invention of the Richter magnitude scale, Richter Scale Day is created to honor and acknowledge Charles F. Richter. He is the man who taught everyone across the world to measure earthquakes using the Richter magnitude scale which measures the quantity of the earthquakes.
“Nothing is less predictable than the development of an active scientific field.” – Charles Francis Richter.
History of National Richter Scale Day
Charles F. Richter was born on 26th April 1900, and he died on 30th September 1985. Charles F. Richter invented the Richter magnitude scale when he was working with Beno Gutenberg at the California Institute of Technology in the year 1935. After the Richter Magnitude Scale was invented, it became the standard scale for measuring earthquake intensity. After 1935, many other magnitude scales are developed. Based on what data is obtained, different ones are used, but they were not as popular as Richter Scale. A record from the US Geological Survey shows that since 1900 the most significant earthquake happened in May 1960 in Chile, South America. This earthquake is called the “Great Chilean Earthquake” measuring 9.5. This earthquake was measured using the Richter Magnitude Scale.
