History of National Punch Day
There is no such mention about when this day was first celebrated and the person who established it. However, food historians consider that this refreshment beverage originated in India from its name. The word Punch comes from the Hindi word Paanch, meaning five. It is believed that the original punch drinks in India are prepared with five ingredients. Punch Day is not a reason to drink. Rather, the day celebrates the five key ingredients. The Punch drinks mostly use alcohol (spirits), lemon, sugar, water, and tea (cinnamon). It is a carbonated beverage usually served in large, wide bowls known as punch bowls at wedding parties and other celebrations. It is believed that in the 17th century, Punch drink was introduced by the sailors who worked for the British East India Company via India. Soon, Punch spread all over Europe and became popular and spread to other countries. Over the centuries, there have been lots of changes brought to the traditional version, and yet it is still a famous drink.
