History of National Nachos Day
Nachos were created around 1943 and can be quickly prepared as a snack or appetizer. With extra ingredients, they can also be made as a full meal. The original recipe was printed in the St. Anne’s Cookbook in 1954. The story goes that in 1943, the wives of American soldiers stationed nearby visited a restaurant where Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya was the maître d’. It was already past closing time, and Ignacio had limited ingredients on hand, just tortillas, shredded cheese, and pickled jalapeño peppers. Needing to serve something, he improvised, creating what we now know as nachos.
