History of National Magic Day
National Magic Day was first celebrated in 1927 and is sponsored worldwide by the Society of American Magicians. This celebration honors the life and achievements of Harry Houdini, one of the world’s most famous magicians, best known for his escapist acts. The date, October 31, was chosen as it marks the anniversary of Houdini’s passing in 1926. Initially created a year after his death as “Houdini Day,” National Magic Day became part of National Magic Week, celebrated from October 25 to October 31, as a tribute to the art and science of magic.
Born Erik Weisz in Hungary, Houdini is recognized globally as a master escapologist and stunt performer. Among his renowned escape acts is the Milk Can Escape, where he escaped from a milk can filled with water, sealed shut. Another of his iconic feats was the Straitjacket Escape, performed while he was suspended by his ankles from a crane. Beyond his escape artistry, Houdini was also a silent film actor and an avid aviator. In 1938, a member of the Society of American Magicians in Chicago requested official permission for a Houdini Day. Mrs. Houdini approved, and October 31 was formally proclaimed as National Magic Day in Harry Houdini’s memory.
