National Hug A Sheep Day is an annual celebration held on October 26. Sheep are woolly, fluffy, snuggly, and bouncy animals that provide us with many valuable resources, such as wool, meat, lanolin, and more. They certainly deserve appreciation for all their hard work! National Hug A Sheep Day celebrates all sheep, both wild and domestic.
“Like sheep that get lost nibbling away at the grass because they never look up, we often focus so much on ourselves and our problems that we get lost.” – Allen Klein

History of National Hug A Sheep Day
National Hug A Sheep Day was first celebrated in 1992 and is observed on the last Saturday of October each year. The day honors the birthday of a sheep named Punkin, the first sheep adopted by the “Crazy Sheep Lady” of Equinox Farms. Punkin was rescued from the Bluegrass Stockyards in 1992 “to stop something bad from happening to him.” After Punkin passed away 12 years later in 2004, the Crazy Sheep Lady wanted to create a way to memorialize him. She conceived the idea of encouraging people everywhere to show their love for sheep. Thus, Hug A Sheep Day was born, gradually growing into an international event where farms host open farm days and invite the public to hug and appreciate sheep. Various related activities are also organized to celebrate this unique bond.
