“I just stay focused, and I always think about gymnastics. I am just doing what I always do… working really hard and pushing myself to the maximum and keeping myself motivated.” – Aly Raisman
History of National Gymnastics Day
National Gymnastics Day was first celebrated in the year 1999. The observance of the day will be annually held on the second Saturday in the month of September. The celebration of Gymnastics Day aims to promote the sport among young people. The day also honors those sportspeople, coaches, and clubs who are actively involved in playing and keeping Gymnastics alive. Ever since the celebration of Gymnastics Day started, it has taken place annually, and it highlights the advantages and attractions of this energetic sport. Since the 5th century B.C., Gymnastics has been in existence. It then originated as an activity in ancient Greece. The Greeks had developed the practice to strengthen their warrior’s skills for the battle.
Gymnastics helps in improving your strength, dexterity, and concentration and thus focuses on hand-to-hand combat for all the necessary physical traits. There was no competitive note about this classic sport until the late 19th century. The Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) was established in Liège, Belgium, in the year 1881. The first modern Olympics held in Athens, Greece, in 1896 included men’s gymnastics, and the first female gymnastics events were featured in 1928 at the Amsterdam Olympics. Present-day modern Olympics has many of the events that were exhibited in the Greek Olympics. Gymnastics is now a popular sport from around the world, which is a part of an event in many prestigious competitions and contests.
The gymnastics movements help in the development of one’s arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest, and abdominal muscles. To indulge in Gymnastics, one must require balance, strength, flexibility, coordination, agility, endurance, and control. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn of Germany is regarded as the “father of modern gymnastics.” He was the one who had developed many events, parallel bars, balance beam, and jumping events during the 1700s, which made the audiences awestruck. The gymnastics competitions are available as an individual sport or as a group activity under different age groups and skill levels. The training for Gymnastics must be started at an early age and needs several hours of practice every day.
