National Disc Golf Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of August. This year it will be celebrated on August 5. Disc golf is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. An estimation shows nearly 8-12 million people play disc golf regularly, with nearly two million people estimated to be regular players. According to the directory of the PDGA course in 2015, there were 5,500 disc golf courses in 40 countries, with different courses being developed and introduced on a regular basis. Hence Disc Golf Day is a perfect day to play disc golf with your friends or family members.
“Golf is about how well you accept, respond to, and score with your misses much more so than it is a game of your perfect shots.” – Dr Bob Rotella
History of National Disc Golf Day
National Disc Golf Day was created by the Professional Disc Golf Association to observe one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. They chose August for the disc golf day, as the month will be ideal for playing disc golf. The first patent for disc golf was issued on the chain-catching device to “Steady” Ed Headrick on August 12th of, 1977, which changed the future of disc golf. On August 2, 1974, disc golfers in the Rochester, NY area decided to make their annual City of Rochester Disc Golf Championship, a great national tournament to see how many other people around the country were playing disc golf. They named the event as American Flying Disc Open, and they put up a brand new 1974 automobile award to the winner to bring the attention of the Frisbee community.
