History of National Daiquiri Day
National Daiquiri Day’s origination and history remain anonymous. Daiquiri is believed to be invented by the men from mines in a small community off the coast of Cuba. An American engineer supervised the particular mining operation, Jennings Cox, the mining happened in a village called Daiquiri in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. After the work, Jennings and his workers used to gather at a place called Venus Bar where one day, Cox made this drink with Bacardi, lime, sugar in a tall glass of ice and named it after the Daiquiri mines. Soon the cocktail became a staple drink of Havana. In 1909, the drink was introduced to the Army and Navy Club in Washington by Admiral Lucius W. Johnson, a U.S. Navy medical officer. The frozen daiquiri was believed to be created by Ernest Hemingway at El Floridita in Havana in the 1940s. Some legends believe the daiquiri to be produced by a bartender named Constantino Ribalaigua. There are many variations and flavors in the daiquiri.
