National Cubicle Day is celebrated on April 28 of every year. National Cubicle Day is observed to honor Robert Propst, who initially created the concept of the office cubicle. The cubicle is a partly enclosed workspace that is divided from other neighboring office workspaces by partitions. The purpose of Cubicle is to separate office workers from the noises and sights of an open workspace this helps the workers to work in private and with fewer distractions and this concept also helps in increasing productivity.
“Nobody actually talks to anybody anymore. People in cubicles next to each other, they e-mail each other.” – Willard Scott.
History of National Cubicle Day
The origin and history of the day are not known. In the year 1967, the office cubicle was designed by the designer Robert Propst for the furniture maker Herman Miller under the name ‘Action Office II.’ Since its introduction, the office cubicle has not undergone any significant changes. Cubicles are made up of modular elements like work surfaces, walls, shelving, and drawers which can be organized depending on the needs of the user. Cubicles provide the workers with an extraordinary degree of privacy and personalization than in old work environments which are usually made up of work surfaces lined up in rows within an open office room. In some offices, cubicle workspaces can be decorated by employees with pictures, posters, and other items of their choice.
