National Collect Rocks Day is celebrated on September 16 of every year. Find out more about the earth’s material and become a geologist for a day. National Collect Rocks Day encourages people to collect some unique, precious, and pretty-looking pebbles from the beach, rocky hills and mountains, quarries, road cuts, and streams.
“All the lessons are in nature. You look at the way rocks are formed – the wind and the water hitting them, shaping them, making them what they are. Things take time, you know?” – Diane Lane
History of National Collect Rocks Day
The National Collect Rocks Day was first celebrated in the year 2015. It was anonymous who had first observed this day and the reason for this celebration. One can obviously assume that this day encourages people of all ages to know more about geology and, in particular, Amateur geology. It is the recreational study and hobby of collecting rocks and mineral specimens found in the natural environment. Rock is a naturally solid aggregate formed by one or more minerals. Rocks contain minerals and metals, and they have been a valuable resource throughout human history and civilization.
Rocks are usually tightly compacted formations of minerals found all over the top solid layer of the Earth called the lithosphere. There are three major types of rocks found based on texture, composition, and size. They are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. About two-thirds of the Earth’s parts are made up of igneous rocks. Over time, one type of rock will turn into another due to exposure to the Earth’s atmosphere or environmental factors. The transition between different types of rocks is termed a rock cycle. The rock can be a bigger piece or a smaller one with a smooth or rough texture. Those pebbles may have a particular color or range of colors and may display unique characteristics.
