National Atheist Day is observed on April 1 of every year. There are so many religious holidays like Eid al-Adha, Diwali, and much more are celebrated every year. All religions around the world have festivities going on all through the year, but these celebrations carry only little meaning for the people who do not believe in the existence of god or gods. Approximately about 2% of the world’s population does not believe in and follow the practices of any religion. They don’t have any holidays dedicated to them, for people who don’t have belief in gods can observe Atheist Day.
“We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.” – Richard Dawkins
History of National Atheist Day
The story behind how the National Atheist Day came about is humorous. The origin of this Day can be traced back to a hoax story that was published in 2003 on the internet. This spoof story said an atheist from Florida requested the local American Civil Liberties Union’s help and registered a case about discrimination imposed on atheists by Christian and other religious festivals and said atheists don’t have any holiday to observe. To this, the judge answered that April 1st is April Fool’s Day was the holiday for the atheists. Readers believed this spoof story when it was initially published online and assumed that April 1st was declared as Atheist Day. That time, April 1st is also known as National Atheist Day, but there is no recorded activity for atheist day.
