History of National Area Code Day
The creator and origin of National Area Code Day remain unknown. Area codes were first developed in the 1940s in the laboratories of AT&T and Bell. The idea of area codes expanded in the following years, officially coming into effect in 1947 under what is known as the North American Numbering Plan. This plan aimed to address the issue of not having enough phone numbers for both the United States and Canada. Initially, each state and province was assigned a single area code, with codes containing a 0 in the middle. To make dialing easier, area codes with lower numbers at the beginning and end were assigned to densely populated areas. In those days, rotary dialers made phone calls easier to place.
