National Mole Day is an annual observance commemorated on October 23rd from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. of each year. The mention of the time looks different, right? Chemistry lovers will know what a mole is and what this particular time denotes. Most people hate chemistry and this day is observed to encourage such people to learn more about this fascinating subject. National Mole Day celebrates the Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 1023) and is celebrated among chemists, chemistry students, and chemistry enthusiasts.
“I can’t explain chemistry. I really can’t. I haven’t got a clue what it’s all about. It just happens. It’s like falling in love. You can’t explain why you fall in love or explain why it’s this particular person.” – Elaine Stritch
History of National Mole Day
Mole Day or National Mole Day was first conceived in an article named The Science Teacher in the early 1980s. The Mole Day Foundation had established this celebration Day. Maurice Oehler had founded the National Mole Day Foundation (NMDF) on May 15, 1991. He is now a retired high school chemistry teacher from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The Day is an unofficial chemistry holiday celebrated on October 23rd from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm. The date and time relate the Avogadro’s number, which is approximately 6.02 x 1023. The digit 6.02 is taken to be the time, and 1023 is taken in the form of month and date, i.e., October 23rd where October is the tenth month in a year (6:02 10/23).
The purpose of Mole Day is to promote, help encourage people to get an interest in chemistry. It also informs people about the interesting facts surrounding the mole unit. Mole is defined as the atomic weight of a molecule of the chemical in grams. In other words, mole is defined as the mass of a substance containing the same number of atoms or molecules or formula units as there are atoms in precisely 12.000 g of 12C. One mole of any substance will include the Avogadro’s Number of molecules or atoms of that substance. Amadeo Avogadro was the first person to discover this relationship, and he had received credit for this after his death. Mole Day is an integral part of National Chemistry Week.
