History of National Molasses Bar Day
There is no mention of the history, origin, and year from when the National Molasses Bar Day has been in celebrated. However, the history and origin of molasses have a long tradition. Molasses or treacle is a thick, sticky, sugary syrup made from sugarcane or sugar beets. It is a by-product obtained by the refining of sugar cane. The sticky and sweetened sugar syrup has been used as a sweetener for food that dates back to the 1500s. The term molasses comes from the Portuguese word ‘melaco,’ which has evolved from the Latin word ‘mel,’ which means ‘honey.’
Typically, there are three kinds of molasses namely light molasses, dark molasses, and blackstrap molasses. Molasses has a very distinctive taste and is one of the ingredients used in different sauces, fruitcakes, gingerbread, baked beans, toffee, cookies, and molasses bars. It contains large amounts of iron, calcium, and magnesium. The amount of sugar extracted, the maturity of the sugarcane, and the method of extraction decide the quality of molasses.
