Meteors are one of nature’s wonders that are commonly known as shooting stars. On a cloudless night, you can look at the sky in the hope of seeing a falling star. National Meteor Watch Day celebrates meteors and is a day that encourages people to look up at the skies and observe the wonder of nature’s celestial fireworks.
“As a kid, I’d lie awake at night and convince myself that a meteor was about to hit the Earth. It’s my fatalistic streak, which I’ve inherited from my mum. I firmly believe something cataclysmic is going to happen in my lifetime and I have to be prepared to run for my life when the time comes.” – Ellie Goulding
History of National Meteor Watch Day
The National Meteor Watch Day’s history and origin are anonymous. However, the Day intends to encourage people to turn their eyes to the skies in hopes of finding the glow of a falling star. Meteors are the shooting stars that occur as a result of the space dust and ice that enters the earth’s atmosphere. They are space particles known as meteoroids that will burn up with a flash of light when they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. Meteors will usually be as small as specks of dust, and they will enter the atmosphere at high speeds. As a result, it will burn up and produce light as they streak across the night sky. Meteors can be seen with the naked eye when it is dark. When a group of meteors enters the Earth in clusters, then it is termed a meteor shower. Approximately, about 20 to 25 million meteors weighing nearly 100 tons are entering the Earth’s atmosphere every day. The tradition of wishing upon shooting stars can be traced back to 127 AD. According to Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer meteor is a result of when God occasionally liked to peer down on the Earth from up above.
