Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti
Dayanand Saraswati was born on 12 February 1824, and he was a Hindu religious leader and founder of the Arya Samaj, a Hindu reform movements of the Vedic tradition. Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti is observed in February/March of each year. According to the Hindu calendar this year it is observed on February 10. This day celebrates Dayanand Saraswati’s Arya Samaj. Arya Samaj is principled under Satyarth Prakash as the light of truth. Arya Samaj condemns practices of several different religions and communities, including such practices as idol worship, animal sacrifice, pilgrimages, priest craft, offerings made in temples, the castes, child marriages, meat eating and discrimination against women. Satyarth Prakash is one of his most influential book which contributed to the Indian independence movement. He was the first to give the call for Swaraj as “Indian for India” in 1876, later taken up by Lokmanya Tilak. Dayanand Saraswati was a sanyasi from boyhood and a scholar. He believed in the trusted authority of the Vedas. Maharshi Dayananda advocated the beliefs of Karma and Reincarnation. He emphasised the Vedic ideals of brahmacharya, including celibacy and devotion to God. Among Maharshi Dayananda’s contributions are his promoting of the equal rights for women, such as the right to education and reading of Indian scriptures, and his commentary on the Vedas from Vedic Sanskrit in Sanskrit as well as in Hindi.
