National Learn To Swim Day is an annual celebration observed on the Third Saturday of May. This year it will be observed on May 20. The day was created to raise awareness about the importance of water safety and to teach both adults and children how to swim. Swimming offers so many health benefits – it builds muscle strength and endurance, helps in maintaining healthy body weight, improves blood circulation, coordination, flexibility, and much more. Not to mention that learning how to swim will save your life or it will allow you to save someone’s life! Hence National Learn To Swim Day is a day to learn this incredibly beneficial skill or improving their existing swimming skills.
“This life is like a swimming pool. You dive into the water, but you can’t see how deep it is.” – Dennis Rodman
History of National Learn To Swim Day
In 2012, Swimways created the National Learn To Swim Day. Initially, it was a small event, but people started to realize how important it was to have such a day, especially during the month when many swimming pools around the U.S.A were open for the summer. Then corporations like Toys”R”Us and Target joined hands with Swimways in celebrating Learn To Swim Day by offering promotions on swimwear. The main aim behind the creation of this day is to raise awareness about the importance of learning how to swim.
