“You might not think that programmers are artists, but programming is an extremely creative profession. It’s logic-based creativity.” – John Romero
History of International Programmers Day
The International Programmers Day was first celebrated in the year 2009. Valentin Balt and Michael Cherviakov of Parallel Technologies proposed the day in 2007. In early 2002, they tried to gather signatures for a petition to the Russian government to recognize the day as the Day of the Programmer official. The Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media, on July 24, 2009, issued a draft of an executive order. It marked the new professional holiday, the Day of the Programmer. The Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, signed the decree on September 11, 2009.
The proclamation mentioned the 256th day of the year is the celebration. It is usually September 13, or September 12 in leap years. The number 256 is chosen as it is the number of distinct values that are represented by an eight-bit byte (28). It is a value well-known to programmers. The number 256 is the highest power of the two. 256 is less than 365, the number of days in an ordinary year.
