A parliamentary system or parliamentary democracy is a practice of democratic governance of a state. This is in contradiction to a presidential system, where the head of state is usually the head of government too. A parliamentary system is a kind of system in which citizens vote and elect the representatives to a legislative parliament, and this member makes laws and decisions for the country. There are two types of Parliament systems, and they are Bicameral and Unicameral. A bicameral parliamentary democracy consists of two chambers of parliament. A unicameral system has only one chamber of parliament. Here is the list of countries that follows the parliament system: Australia, Canada, Denmark, India, Israel, Japan, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. So in order to celebrate the fundamental principle of parliamentarian, the International Day of Parliamentarism is observed.
History of International Day of Parliamentarism
The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of Parliamentarism in the year 2018. The date was chosen as June 30th to indicate the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 1889. The IPU is the global organization of parliaments. As of now, the IPU has about 179 Members in the Parliaments. The slogan of IPU is “For democracy. For everyone.” So let’s see how the day is celebrated in the upcoming article.
